Compared to Huynh's perspective, the evidence from the text shows that Douglass suffered more than Wright because Douglass was a slave, while Wright was a freed man. If it were not for Douglass' conditions, he would never have been: paranoid and developed isolation from the world; acquired a disadvantage with his education; and be maliciously mistreated by his slave owners. Similarly, an American author named Brennan Manning concluded that: “Suffering, failure, loneliness, pain, discouragement and death will be part of your journey.” In the case of Douglass and Wright, both were part of their journey, but because Douglass' journey was harsher, in fact his life was much worse than Douglass's.
