The creativity and ingenuity of human beings have enabled the development of technologies that, overall, have brought benefits to all of humanity. Probably one of the most important, if not the most crucial, technological achievements made by man is that of the Internet. The Internet has enabled a seemingly minor transfer of data and information in a matter of seconds. With this innovation came increased communication, improved understanding of other cultures, and mass data collection. The amount of data that now exists thanks to the Internet has created the need for big data. Big data developed as a solution to traditional IT infrastructure that had become obsolete due to its inability to manage the enormous quantities of data that exist today. The benefits of big data are ever-expanding and attractive as it can improve the efficiency of business, research and health sciences, but the consequences of using big data are equally intensifying and causing backlash in many communities. Current Big Data issues and the increasingly dependent nature of Big Data will undoubtedly impact the use of Big Data in the future. While many people recognize the power of the Internet and the amount of data accessible via the Internet, these same people are unaware of big data itself. According to Tom Price author of the article entitled Big Data and Privacy, “Big Data is the collection and analysis of enormous amounts of information by supercomputers” (Price). It is also better known as the way data extraction is achieved from a plethora of non-traditional sources. Often these sources can involve unstructured data such as html, email and social data. However, these sources can also be structured… middle of paper…many parties will do whatever it takes to obtain that information. Overall, there is an increasing use of big data by different entities. organizations, industries and people. Many governments, researchers, scientists and companies use big data to gain insights to help them achieve their goals. Obtaining information from these individuals is considered by many to be controversial and harmful to people's privacy. The debate over the use of big data will become increasingly important as more and more information is collected from a variety of sources. As more data is collected, the less private individual information will become. The topic of big data will become increasingly popular as technology advances and more data becomes available to a number of different entities.
