In the classic comedy Romeo and Juliet, Friar Laurence has an important role. Romeo and Juliet trusted him completely as he was the priest of their town. They turned to the friar for help and advice in some crucial points of the work. Little did these two lovers know that their decision to ask Friar Laurence for help would ultimately lead to their deaths. Friar Laurence was responsible for the death of Romeo and Juliet because he married Romeo and Juliet, he was afraid of committing a sin and because of his failed plan to save Juliet from marrying Paris. One of the main reasons Friar Laurence was held responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet is because he married them. First, this marriage was performed without parental consent. Secondly, he could have tried to support their relationship instead of marrying them and not telling anyone. Talk about how these two will become one in marriage; “For, with thy licenses, thou shalt not stand alone / Till the holy church embodies two in one” (Shakespeare 47).
