With the increase in mass shootings, more Americans are choosing to get a concealed handgun permit. Unfortunately, most of these shootings occur in public buildings where people are prohibited from carrying concealed weapons. If these types of bans don't stop criminals, then law-abiding citizens should not be denied the opportunity to protect themselves and others. There should be no public building where a person who has legally obtained a concealed carry permit cannot be permitted to carry his or her firearm. Most employers do not want firearms on their premises, even in parking lots. According to a recent WSJ article, “Guns in the Parking Lot: A Delicate Workplace Issue” (October 15, 2013), the CEO of Starbucks has instructed his customers not to bring guns into bars, and they are not alone in this request. However, many find the action of a private company to oppose public gun laws questionable. There is a strong call to ban guns, not just in the workplace, but everywhere. However, employers' right to restrict guns is limited especially in states with pro-gun laws. Currently, there are 22 states with laws about bringing a gun to work. In these states, property owners cannot prevent a worker or visitor from carrying firearms in vehicles in parking areas (Murray, 2013). The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution gives individuals the right to bear arms for self-defense. In a recent case, District of Columbia v. Heller, the United States Supreme Court on June 26, 2008 ruled that an individual has the right to possess a firearm for self-defense. This was the Supreme Court's first decision on the interpretation of the Second Amendment since 1939 (Library of Congress, 2014). Evidently, those who carry...... middle of paper...... defend them.Works CitedWork CitiedChin, Paula. “A Massacre in Texas.” People. November 4, 1991 vol. 36 No. 17. Web.
