Topic > Analysis of Lewis and Clark at Three Forks - 1780

Unity and exploration are common themes of this series of documents. Chronologically, Document A is an essay by John Jay, the second of the Federalist Paper. It is credited with being one of the strongest documents written to convince Americans to adopt a federal government. Document B is a painting by American frontier painter Edgar Samuel Paxson called Lewis and Clark at Three Forks. It is highly regarded for its near-perfect depiction of the famous expedition that Lewis and Clark undertook to discover the Wild West. Document C is an excerpt from Alexis de Tocqueville's book Democracy in America, credited for its impartial examination of America's welfare state. These three documents are connected in that they sequentially reveal events that occurred in the United States between the late 18th century and the mid-19th century. First of all, from the excerpt of the federalist document, we see a young country struggling with unity; second, the painting reveals a country that has achieved unity (ignoring the native Indians) and offers the promise of a better life to its people; to a mature, united country whose people have amassed fortune and are still haunted by the desire for more fortune. All three of these excerpts from different works affirm that the American people are united. Is it really true that Americans were united in the periods presented by these passages? To fully understand the relationship between these three documents, I will first analyze their form or structure; secondly, I will focus on the themes of Unity, Culture and Exploration and, finally, I will discuss the level of application of literary techniques by the writers. Federalist Paper, No.2 is a pers...... medium of paper. ...we agree that Americans are united and endowed with natural resources, but we disagree that Americans have the same culture. The form of these documents is different. Jay's article is a persuasive article while Tocqueville's excerpt is an expository article. Jay expresses the fear of separation in this excerpt; Tocqueville is happy with the promise made by America to its people, but unhappy towards the end of the people who insatiably crave wealth; Paxson's sadness expresses his sadness in his painting as the idea behind it is for Sacajawea to show the site of his capture. Jay effectively uses hyperbole to show Americans that they are united; Tocqueville similarly effectively applies hyperbole to show his readers the magnitude of the American desire to prosper. All three documents are able to communicate their ideas effectively because they are properly organized (logical). These three documents are strong literary works.
