For hidden children, diaries are just one of the ways in which they express themselves. Considering the life they had been forced into and the death and destruction just outside their door, the children used artwork to open up and deal with emotions they couldn't show to anyone else. In an article on ushmm.org it says: “Diaries, among the most intimate forms of writing, record the most intimate thoughts, hopes, fears and aspirations. They are generally not intended for the public or prying eyes. For a child in hiding, however, the personal nature of the diary represented a serious danger. A detail about one's true family or identity could betray its author as well as its savior. This show explains how diaries and other writings and works that could reveal their location posed a huge risk. It also sheds light on how important the diaries might have been to the children who kept them.
