After analyzing Internet search results for advertisements aimed at seniors, I came to a stark conclusion: Overall, there are very few of them. But I found some advertisements in magazines and on television that really spoke volumes about the notion of aging and the elderly. Some of these advertisements viewed aging positively; demonstrating that even in old age people can be active and seen quite popularly in public media. Unfortunately, other ads played on negative stereotypes of aging and the elderly, particularly the idea that as you get older you are no longer able to fully take care of yourself. The first ad I found was from AARP, it showed a silver-haired woman in a red dress. The ad's tagline read, "For most marketers, consumers die the moment they turn 50." This statement highlights that older adults do not receive the publicity they deserve. I found this interesting since it was the exact conclusion I had come to just moments before. This advertisement could be extrapolated to show the stereotypes that seniors do not need to advertise because they are not a profitable population. It may be a common belief that as you get older you become more predictable and less willing to accept change. Therefore, they are less likely to purchase a new or different product and so advertisers shouldn't even try. At the moment, the commercials and advertisements all seem to be aimed at 18-25 year olds who are only interested in sexy people, beer and sports, an interesting phenomenon that was easily visible in my research. The next ad I found was a companion ad in People magazine. . It showed a very fit 48-year-old woman. The caption reads "BIKINI BODY AT 4...... center of paper...... I found out it was for what appears to be a nursing home. It shows four elderly people next to a list of the home's services cure under the heading "Squeeze more out of life". I think this advertisement is an example of two different stereotypes. The first one concerns the issue of death. It makes it seem like they are fighting to get more, instead of living just happy. This could be an example of the stereotype that older people always have to worry about when life will end and how they should always strive to "squeeze a lot more out of life". care are a great example of the stereotype that as you get older you will need someone else to take care of you. This means that as you get older it is better to lose your independence and stay at home than to live without assistance.
