Topic > The importance of learning to dance - 801

Every school in the world teaches with the same system. English and maths at the top, then the arts at the bottom. “There is no education system on the planet that teaches children dance every day the same way we teach them math” (Robinson 8:53). It is understandable to teach literacy; It is extremely important that everyone learns to read and write. However, I believe that understanding how to use your body is just as important. Many people only see dance as moving your body to the beat of music, just as people only see basketball as throwing the ball into the basket. What most of us don't realize is that there is so much more than what our eyes can see. When it comes to dancing, the dancer must understand how to use their body correctly. For example, being able to feel every muscle in your body so you can flex or point your toes. Constantly using a part of the body that no one really uses in everyday life helps you understand and be more aware of your muscles. Additionally, many people have back problems, or ankle pain just because they don't know exactly how to walk properly, or stand still. These are the people who have never been interested in the arts or creativity itself. Creative lessons, like dance, can teach children different mental and physical strategies that they can use throughout their lives. (INSERT RESEARCH CITATION HERE). Learning to dance can also teach you “observational learning.” Like when playing basketball, there is always a technique to obtain the best results. So learning to dance helps you understand and use more muscles in your body, learning any other physical activity will be much easier to understand. Not only that, but studies have shown that dancing makes you smarter. “Dancing integrates different brain functions… middle of paper… as if it were important, but it also kills creativity in many children. There are billions of brilliant people on this planet, but some of them are brought down because of their test scores. So they stop being creative and just focus on getting good grades and getting a degree to get a job. However, having a college degree doesn't mean much anymore. Everyone gets a college degree, but it's still hard to find a good job after all these years of school. These people don't try to think of other possible ways to succeed; they give up and live a miserable life. As Ken Robinson said in his TED Talk video, “We need to fundamentally rethink the view of intelligence.” Being smart shouldn't depend on how much money you get paid or how well you scored on a test. Being creative is what will change the world; it's what will bring original ideas to the table.
