The Moso society, better known as Na, is a small minority group living in the Yunnan and Sichuan provinces of China. For decades they have implemented a matrilineal system through their culture. Matrilineality is defined as a system in which their descendants are traced using their maternal lineages. Since the Moso society applied the matrilineal system in their culture, there are several implications and characteristics that can be analyzed from this point of view. One of the practices that conform to matrilineality is called “walking marriage.” In Moso culture there is no traditional marriage, so in a family there are neither husband nor wives. In walking marriage the spouses do not live in the same family, after midnight the man who has been granted permission to visit the woman comes to spend the night with her and returns to his house early in the morning. As a result, Moso family structure, child preference, and gender equality are affected by the practice of walking marriage. Generally people misunderstand the concept of walking marriage. They would think that pairings in society would only last for the short term, but in reality women would spend their lives with a particular partner for a longer period. Many anthropologists (2009) define this relationship as “serial monogamy” in which an individual has only one partner at a time. The term “once” in this particular context can sometimes transition to a longer period that lasts a lifetime. Although the relationship between the partners may be long-term, the father will never live with the woman's family or vice versa. The man and the woman will continue to live and take on the responsibilities of their family separately. Significantly, when children are born,… middle of paper… families looking for additional income by running a boat rental business or simply being a tour guide. Although Moso women would think that there is no such equality in their society, evidently men also play an important role in supporting the financial needs of the Moso ethnic group. The Moso society living in Sichuan and Yunnan provinces in China have practiced matrilineality for decades. One of the practices of the matrilineal system is the implementation of “walking marriage” in several aspects of the community, particularly in family structure, preference for motherhood, and gender equality. In a walking marriage practice, the partners are not tied to each other. But they have their own responsibilities in terms of supporting financial needs. As a result, the Moso family structure is extremely stable. There will be no family problems, such as divorce and child custody.
