The problems of overcrowding in prisons, gangs in prisons and illegal drugs and substances. In this assignment I will discuss these three problems in order respectively and what can be done to correct them. Additionally, I will discuss what I would do to correct these problems if I were responsible, I will use my own ideas along with research from credible sources to support my ideas. First, I would like to discuss the problems of overcrowding in prisons. Prison is not a good and fun place to be, however, more and more people are going to prison. This problem not only threatens our correctional system, but it also threatens our economy. Our criminal justice system has addressed this problem in several ways, including the privatization of prison and the increased use of parole and probation. One of the things I would try to do is prevent repeat offenders from going back to prison. According to (Wikoff, Linhorst & Morani, 2012.), “In 1994, more than two-thirds of state prisoners were rearrested for one or more serious crimes within three years of release. Nearly half of those released returned to prison during that period for parole violations or new convictions.” (p. 289). The reason I chose to address recidivism is because I don't believe in lesser punishment and punishment. I believe that the punishment must fit the crime for justice to prevail. If I were in charge, I would try to address and correct this problem by promoting jobs for them once they get out of prison. I would create incentive programs for companies that are willing to hire convicts with either monetary incentives or tax exemptions. Seco...... middle of paper ......problems that would continue and could get worse in the future if we continue with the same methods and techniques we have used so far. Many people think that they could do better if they had such power to reform and implement laws and policies, in reality, however, these problems are very complex in nature. (January 27, 2010).
