In Good Night and Good Luck, director George Clooney follows the conflict between television journalist Edward R. Murrow and anti-communist senator Joseph McCarthy during the difficult times of the Red Scare. Murrow uses his television show to expose McCarthy's fallacious arguments, while providing his own opinion on the issue. He begins by defending former Air Force pilot Milo Radulovich because he is not the communist agent that McCarthy accuses him of being. Because of his radical messages against McCarthy, advertisers begin to withdraw their ads. So Good Night and Good Luck was placed in an unwanted time slot on Sunday afternoon and the final five episodes were assigned. The conflict between Murrow and McCarthy is so deep that, due to his explicit messages against a politician, the program is eventually cancelled. Although his arguments are controversial for the time, Murrow shows courage in exposing McCarthy's fallacious arguments, showing how McCarthy is making false accusations against Radulovich. Murrow is right to show that McCarthy's argument against the rules of evidence is fallacious; the fact that McCarthy believes certification is unnecessary reveals how weak his overall argument is. As McCarthy continues to make claims without facts, his argument becomes weak. This is revealed when McCarthy accuses Radulovich of being a Piper 2 communist, with the only source being a report about how his father reads a Serbian newspaper. (Clooney) Without authentic evidence from a credible source, an argument is as good as a blatant statement. McCarthy's "evidence" is in itself unfounded. Therefore, his allegations contain no substance, and lack the foundation necessary to provide solid, sub… half paper… information about his suspicions. It was considered taboo then to have any relationship or alliance with a source of communism. In this case McCarthy is right to suspect that Radulovich could very likely be affiliated with communism. While his motives may have been correct, his tactics were unfair and reckless. It is part of Murrow's career as a journalist to seek out the facts and corroborate them with credible sources and evidence, so Murrow has a greater basis on which to rest his defense statements. McCarthy's claims, however, provide no valid basis and lack the necessary standing to create a solid and logical argument. The way Murrow defends Radulovich may lead one to conclude that Murrow could very likely be a communist. However, it is wrong to accuse someone of such vile and treacherous actions without concrete evidence to support their arguments..
