A class system began to appear with a clearly defined wealthy class, middle class, and working class. The wealthy class has replaced the nobility, and now you could become rich instead of being born into it. In 1850 the wealthy class, which represented 10% of the population, controlled 70% of the wealth. (Lesson 11). During this time, a distant middle class appeared consisting of lawyers, doctors, teachers, clerks, accountants, and other employees (Give Me Liberty 348). The middle class had women who stayed at home and ran the household and men were expected to work (lesson 11). The middle class was often attracted to evangelical religions and was the driving force behind the temperance movement (lesson 11).
