Floods in Indonesia are a major annual problem for poorer areas along rivers, particularly in East Java along the Bengawan Solo. The impact does not only affect their homes, but also their lands, cultivated fields, their animals and even the infrastructure within the villages. This means that every year they have to rebuild, renovate and replant everything that was destroyed by the floods, resulting in serious financial losses. The villages near the Solo River are not protected from future floods and little or very few changes have been made to adapt the villages to cope with future floods. Floods have been more frequent and voluminous in the last decade, most likely due to deforestation. This is one of the main reasons why Bengawan Solo experiences flooding every year. Deforestation increases soil erosion and therefore greater impacts from floods. The resulting mudslides caused by deforestation are another impact that causes many problems. To avoid soil erosion and mudslides, trees and other plants with long root systems can be planted along the river bank to decrease flooding, natural reasons such as rainfall and river morphology are one of the factors floods. People in the villages are used to floods and do not see them as a problem, and have adapted their lives, homes and crops to the annual floods. But in my opinion houses need to be better adapted to floods, for example when the flood hits the house, the toilets also overflow, so both the interior and exterior need to be better adapted to avoid as many impacts as possible. Although flooding is a large-scale global problem, there are only three “key players” or agents that can make or break a… paper medium… centuries of drainage channels to be built and dug throughout the village, so when floods hit the village the water can flow freely through the drains, to reduce the impact on the roads and cultivated fields, to avoid too much damage. This is an economical solution to avoid some flood damage. Since many villagers use the river for washing, cleaning, waste disposal and sometimes as toilets, I propose to build small public facilities where villagers can wash clothes, wash dishes, bathe, dispose of waste and also provide toilet facilities. Also, there should be a proposal for excavating drainage next to the plantation fields so that the drainage canals can be used as irrigation along with the drainage canals. There should also be drainage systems along roads and paths, to reduce the impact when floods hit villages.
