Topic > Domestic Violence in Advertising - 752

Domestic abuse is a very important issue. Someone can suffer physical, mental and verbal abuse. These 1950s ads show women being mentally and physically abused. Even if the ads don't explicitly promote abuse, they use abuse to sell their product. The advertisements claim that women are inferior to men because in one you see a woman who is essentially a slave to her husband and in the other the husband beats his wife. The image of the husband spanking his wife because she didn't buy fresh food. the coffee bought is black and white. The fact that it is in black and white suggests that it is an image released in the 1950s. During this time, women were only seen as domesticated housewives, just to look after their husbands. Those were the days when domestic abuse didn't exist and beating your wife was your business alone. This image also indicates that women must be domesticated only because the advertisement advertises fresh coffee and the coffee is usually prepared in the kitchen. Therefore, a woman should always stick to her duty and do housework or make sure her husband gets fresh coffee. The ad is obviously aimed at the spouse because at the top of the image it says "If your husband finds out you aren't doing in-store testing for fresher coffee", indicating that if she doesn't buy the right type of coffee, that in this case it's Chase and Sanborn Coffee, she will be spanked and humiliated. The ad basically implies that women need to be taught a lesson when they do something wrong, almost as if they are children and don't know any better. The commercial is intended to make women fear their husbands when they don't obey. The second commercial advertises a tie from the Van Heusen company. In the photo there is a man lying in bed while being served by his wife. The wife in this advertisement is on her knees looking at her husband next to the bed. Her being on her knees makes her seem weak and vulnerable. His being in his robe could also symbolize that he is vulnerable because someone wearing his robe is typically at home. The husband, on the other hand, is in a relaxed position with his hands behind his head.
