This quote means that some people hide behind a face or mask and when someone finds out. Some won't be upset about this since most people nowadays lie, but it will be harder to trust that person. It also appears that the person who lied is in a higher position. What this quote really says is true because lying to a person makes it seem like you are actually better than them, so you don't have to tell them the whole truth. This kind of situation can also be seen in literature such as “The Soldier's Home”, “Hills Like a White Elephant” and “Ernest Hemingway's A Clean and Well-Lighted Place”.
