I learn the end of the story, A Rose For Emily by William Faulkner, Homer was dead during all the years Emily remained alone, you can see how Emily decays over time. When Emily's father died, she barely left home (Faulkner 150). There was a smell coming from the house, a stench that his neighbors began to complain about (Faulkner 151). Her neighbors were very worried about the smell and about Emily herself. However, no one really went to confront her about it. People care about their surroundings because it is an equal representation of themselves. No one would want to live in a contaminated and tarnished environment. People like to express themselves to others by giving a presentation. People become sad and so does their surroundings. When you live in a depressing place, they become depressing too. We become part of our environment and that environment influences us from the outside. One of Grierson's neighbors tried to convince the mayor if he could talk to Emily about the smell. The mayor at the time was Judge Stevens and he was eighty years old (Faulkner 150). It was still the days of the Old South, and the mayor thought it was not a gentlemanly thing to do. Instead, one night some neighbors gathered and snooped around Emily's house and broke into her house to clean it (Faulkner 151). Emily had a mental breakdown after her father's death. Her neighbors came to the house to console her but she was not grieving. Usually when someone dies, an individual wears black which signifies condolences and sorrow. However, Emily was not wearing such a dress. On the other hand he told the neighbors that his father would not die for the next three days (Faulkner 151). When someone close to us dies, we ... middle of paper ......arted again. She started dating Homer, and then the townspeople suggested they get married. After Emily and Homer got "married", they never left the house again. The next time the townspeople saw her, "she had put on weight and her hair was turning gray" (Faulkner 154). We can see that Emily didn't take care of herself. She just let go and started to decay just like her house. Nobody said a word to her, but everyone pitied her. Today's society would behave very differently if someone were in Emily's situation. Every day our government develops new organizations that can help others improve themselves. Nowadays people stop pitying others and put their sympathy to good use by intervening and taking action. Because only humans can understand what other humans feel. We need that connection with others to help ourselves.
