We have a system where my employees are able to clock in for the day on their iPhone and it sends a message to my iPad that they have started the day. If they are late, it adds a quarter point to their attendance policy for the year. Every morning I check and review the times and add points if necessary. Seeing that this employee hadn't clocked in yet, I added the quarter point to his record. The next day, during our weekly sales meeting, I handed out everyone's attendance log and the employee asked me why he received the quarter point. I explained that he was late the day before, then he proceeded to tell me that he wasn't, he had been on time and had screenshots of his time sheet saved on his phone. After reviewing the images and digging deeper into the issue, I learned from our IT department that there was an issue with numerous phones that day, employees clocked in as they were supposed to, but the system simply didn't register it. So, after gathering all the information and apologizing to my employee for my mistake, I deleted the quarter point from his record. Another error in judgment is projection (Bethel University, 2013).
