Tuberculosis. It has been the cause of countless deaths throughout human history. It has been a scary disease and has existed among humans for thousands of years; In the last two centuries alone it has ruthlessly killed and paralyzed billions of people! It has also been called the white plague or white death, since this single microbe can be so devastating. It is one of the diseases that have tormented man for centuries and the story of this gruesome mass murderer continues to this day. Tuberculosis (TB) has several infections that can completely immobilize the body. Its infections are varied and generally corrodes the lung tissues and forms blisters that release pus. As the disease progresses, the lungs would be devoured mercilessly and the victim would become pale and frail, cough up blood and become unable to breathe. The word consumption originates from this disease because: o Digestive tract infections can cause severe vomiting, bloody diarrhea and acute pain. In addition to the lungs, it can also infect the bloodstream and even the kidneys. Tuberculosis can also paralyze people's nervous systems and their bones. Basically, it can completely destroy one's body. Surprisingly, the germ that causes it (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) is extremely small. This killer germ is transmitted through droplet infection including sneezing and coughing (less contagious than the cold or flu but fatal), and only people with active tuberculosis are contagious. (63) Another way it can infect humans is through milk, and milk infections are extremely rare. The treatment of this killer began with a man named Hermann Brehmer, who began building a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients, which provided healthy diet and fresh air. This idea spread across Europe and eventually... middle of paper... The US Department of Health and Human Services proposed a goal of completely abolishing tuberculosis from the Earth by 2010. However, several counties in Missouri has declared the recent increase in tuberculosis and said it still poses a threat because it is airborne and contagious; tuberculosis will continue to pose a danger to humanity (Nochlin, 2010). People still have to overcome various obstacles to achieve this goal as AIDS and tuberculosis are working together to kill victims faster and intensify the dangers of some forms of tuberculosis. Several parts of the world are also in danger, including India and Africa, and Africa is particularly in grave danger. There are 25 million HIV-positive people and 200 million people infected with inactive tuberculosis (Zimmerman, 2003). Of course, these statistics predict an inevitable massacre and the white death could become the largest health disaster in human history.
