The Beatles were mostly influenced by Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Carl Perkins influenced the Beatles and Buddy Holly covers. On 6 July 1957 John Lennon was performing with his amateur group *Skittle at a church picnic in the Liverpool suburb; it is there that Paul McCartney first saw John Lennon and invited him to join his band. Soon after they started writing songs, one of the songs they wrote was called "The One After 909". Towards the end of the year Paul McCartney convinced John Lennon to let George Harrison join the band. George Harrison was influenced by rockabilly; he soon became the lead guitarist. The Beatles started to become popular in Europe and decided to travel to the United States where they held the first show that started it all. The show was at 8am on February 9, 1964, the first live performance of "The Beatles" on United States soil, on the "Ed Sullivan Show" (more than 70 million people attended the show). That year they occupied the top five spots on the Billboard charts and sold more than a billion records. They made their first film titled “A Hard Day's Night” directed by Richard Lester, which grossed over $1.3 million in its first week after release. They saw an opportunity to capitalize on the fame and began selling Beatles wigs, clothes, dolls and lunch boxes. But fame comes with a reward because when they first came to America all the songs were about love and relationships, wearing fancy clothes and being approved by society.
