In Shakespeare's play The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, the title leads the mind to believe that Caesar is the tragic hero; however, this is not the case. The noble Brutus is much more suited to the role of tragic hero. A tragic hero is a character with a tragic flaw that ranges from good luck to complete bad luck with a fairly rapid fall. While some might argue that Caesar fits this portrayal, Brutus is a better choice. He goes from the top of the social ladder to an international piece of shit when he joins the conspirators and kills his friend Caesar. After allowing Antony to speak at Caesar's funeral, the entire country turns against him and he is forced to flee Rome. His fall is so incredibly terrible that to this day he is considered a traitor. His murderous ways caused the loss of Rome's government; after all, what other ruin could beat it? To be a tragic hero you have to be tragically flawed. Brutus was a very flawed character, even more so than Caesar. Brutus is manipulated with little effort by the conspirators. Cassius and the other conspirators took his mind and molded it into the mind of a renegade traitor. They convince him to join their premeditated plan to kill Caesar. He may have done it out of his sincere love for Rome, but mostly because he is too proud for his own good. “I have heard where many of the best respected in Rome (except immortal Caesar), speaking of Brutus and groaning under the yoke of his age, have wished that the noble Brutus had his eyes” (891). His huge ego leads him to actually believe that the Romans want him instead of Caesar. Just because few Romans love him, he kills a dear friend. Being a traitor is definitely a flaw. “…throw this to the wind…middle of the paper…honorable man. «According to his virtue, let us use him with all respect and burial rites» (999). He is respected enough for his enemies to give him a proper burial, which was probably not a common act. Brutus is an effective character in the story. If it weren't for him, the story would be about heartless killers who kill out of pure spite. He brings a softer touch with his gentler reasoning. He is the most dynamic character and the one who changes the most from beginning to end. For this reason he is the most interesting character and the tragic hero. In conclusion, Brutus fits the portrayal of the tragic hero much more than any other character in the play. He has a tragic character flaw, goes from good fortune to bad luck, and eventually has a sense of enlightenment. All in all, Brutus might be a hero, but it's probably not a good idea to count on him for a save..
