Since sociologists argue that social class position greatly affects "life chances" in the world, it is safe to assume that most Westminster students are quite high on the scale classy. This assumption would arise from current ideas of status and class based on income and other assets. For me, I am no exception when it comes to the stereotype of the private school student. Even though my family may not reach the top of the social ladder, we live a comfortable life. As I continue reading I will talk about my family's current social position, predicting what my family's future social position will be in twenty years, and the effects my current status will have on me in the future. As I said before, my family didn't reach the top of Gilbert and Kahl's six-class social class model. However, we live a very comfortable life living on the border between upper middle class and lower class. I created a 7th step in the Gilbert and Kahls model to accommodate where my family is located. My family is in a middle-class position due to their educational, economic, and professional position in American society. Both of my parents graduated from high school and college, which is common in lower-middle class positions. However, my father is an exception and went on to postgraduate studies earning a business degree and an MBA. This is an educational characteristic of being in the upper-middle class. The second factor in the Gilbert and Kahl model is income. Together, my parents earn an estimated amount above the lower-middle class amount of $60,000 and below the upper-middle class amount of $125,000. This places them firmly in the new middle-middle class category in economic terms. My parents' professional positions......middle of paper......and education. My parents managed to save me and send me to college. Most parents recognize this and know that this is the best advantage in our society to increase the child's social class position. This for me was the biggest influence on my future due to my social class at the time. After writing this article, I took a moment to reflect on everything I wrote, my parents have been the biggest influence in my life when it comes to my social class now as well as in the future. Future social class position is greatly influenced by our current social class position. This can provide many disadvantages as well as advantages when it comes to climbing the ladder of social class position. I gained greater respect for my parents and everything they gave me so that I could succeed and become something more than what they had in their lives.
