Topic > Pros and Cons of the Second Amendment - 1846

Author Asha Bendele discusses this topic in her article "Loss and Hope." He states that “According to the US Census Bureau, Chicago has the highest crime rate in the nation” (112). The average person in Chicago cannot legally have access to a firearm, but people are still able to get their hands on one. This significantly demonstrates that a gun ban will only harm this country and increase criminal activity. Most of those who oppose the Second Amendment want other major cities to model what Chicago has done with gun laws. Once these other cities begin to model themselves on the city of Chicago, we would immediately begin to see an increase in violence, drug use, and gun crimes. Schools have also become victims of the “gun-free zone” curse. The most serious criminals know that, in these areas, there is no one who can stand up to them, which gives them plenty of time to commit these evil acts and escape unscathed. Author Grant Arnold talks about this in “Arming the Good Guys: School Zones and the Second Amendment.” He states: “Policies that make areas “gun-free” provide a sense of security to those who engage in magical thinking, but in practice, of course, murderers are not stopped by gun-free zones. As always, it is honest people – the very ones you wish were armed – who tend to obey the law” (487). We need to realize that “gun free zones” are really just an area where the people there can be sitting ducks. The last thing we want to see on the news is the death of a child who was not protected because of these laws. The only way we can think of stopping a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with one
