Topic > Analysis of Sodom and Gomorrah - 1119

Despite the unknown locations of the two cities described in the Bible, Sodom and Gomorrah, the general consensus is that they are located on the southern Dead Sea Plain. Debate has been fierce over the exact location between the Northern theory and the Southern theory. Some scholars believe that these cities of sin are located in the northern location. However, there is very little data to suggest this position. It is also plausible that neither location is the site of these two cities. It will only be through continued excavations that the exact sites of Sodom and Gomorrah can be revealed. It is written in the Bible, “the men of Sodom were wicked, great sinners against the Lord. (Genesis 13:13). Because of their grave sins, God destroyed four of the five cities of the plain. Sodom and Gomorrah and two nearby cities, Admah and Zeboiim were destroyed by fire and brimstone, only Bela also known as Zoar was spared. But, before the destruction, Lot, Abraham's nephew, and his family were allowed to leave the city for a safe port and fled to Zoar. There are many who do not believe this event happened. Christians and non-Christians alike have difficulty understanding God's supernatural work and power. Furthermore, it embodies God's judgment on man's sinful nature. People have a hard time understanding this, especially in today's society, since homosexual behavior is the sin that God is judging. There is archaeological evidence to support that this event occurred. This event is a precise fact in the history of man. “The Genesis account is written in narrative form and is referenced by many other Old Testament writers.” Jesus, who was also an eyewitness as Lo...... middle of paper ......ships that are politically linked. Furthermore, the cities appear to be fortified with walls around them. The wadis demonstrate that they had an irrigation system in place if water was needed. Furthermore, there is strong evidence from the biblical description of the cities and the dates of the destruction of archaeological finds in the five cities. There is also some evidence of a major earthquake in this region dating back to the times in question. Additionally, there is evidence of a massive fire appearing to erupt from above. The Bible is very clear that the cities were destroyed by fire and brimstone, in Gen 19:24 “Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD from heaven.” I believe that with continued archaeological excavations in the south more evidence will be found that Sodom and Gomorrah are located within this region.
