The Greek author Homer wrote an epic poem called The Odyssey, about a man named Odysseus. The poem centers on a man's journey back home after a long and violent decade-long war. Odysseus and his crew are trying to reach their homeland, Ithaca. They are tired and hungry and will do anything to get home. Little does Odysseus know that greed will make this journey home take another ten years. Ulysses and his crew demonstrate greed for the first time when they land on the Isle of Cicones. They noticed that the city was less defended and asked if they should attack. Odysseus agrees that it is tempting, but thinks it might ruin their luck. They claim that the gods “have thrown this fat little city into our laps… They (the gods) would be angry if we rejected their gift… It would be bad luck not to attack” (Evslin, 5). Odysseus already had treasure from Troy, but they decided to attack. After plundering all the city's treasures, they got drunk on the beach. While drunk and unaware of what was happening, the Cicones return and attack Ulysses' crew....
