Louisiana culture is not a general set of customs and beliefs shared by all who live in the area. Louisiana is a state where many different elements blend together to create what can be described as South Louisiana culture. The two predominant elements that make up the culture in the southern region of the state are the Creole and Cajun cultures, which have many different influences within them. A complex blend of many different elements including religion, language, music and food, creates the unique culture of the Cajuns and Creoles in the South Louisiana region. Cajuns are considered descendants of Acadian exiles who live primarily within the state of Louisiana. The French colonized the Acadia region which is now Nova Scotia and the Acadians were the French settlers who lived in the area. However there were also English settlers in the area and the groups did not get along. The French lost Nova Scotia to the English in a war that led to the Treaty of Utrecht (signed in 1713) which formally named Acadia as a British territory (Dormon, 39). The treaty forced the Acadians to take an oath of allegiance to the British crown which they refused because this would have required them to renounce their Catholic religion for that of the Anglican church, so the likelihood of another war with the French was high. The Acadians' refusal to take the oath to the English caused the English to order the deportation of the Acadians who then fled with everything they could carry. In 1784, the King of Spain agreed to allow the Acadians to settle southern Louisiana. However, when the Acadians arrived, they had some problems with the French aristocracy who did not react... middle of paper... effectively." Louisiana History 53.2 (2012): 133-167.
