Topic > Our 19th Century Curriculum, an article by Andy Kessler

Summary The article I choose to focus on is called Our 19th Century Curriculum by Andy Kessler. In essence, the document denounces the current curriculum used in high schools and especially in universities. As the title shows, Kessler calls it a 19th century curriculum because he believes the curriculum used then is the same one used today. This is exactly what he calls the problem. Kessler begins by pointing out that college graduates don't get jobs because they aren't taught relevant information. “Look no further than the huge gap between what universities are producing and what employers want from new hires.” This quote exemplifies Kessler's idea that the curriculum is not only outdated but also does not develop skilled workers in the industry. The solution he finds is to change the curriculum so that it can adapt to the modern era. Kessler shows that previously used classroom subjects are unnecessary in today's jobs and environment and suggests that a new college curriculum that reflects changes over the years can be an improvement for our generation. The article indicates that the program should be more practical and realistic. He also states that technology, being an important part of today's culture, should be integrated into our educational programs. The piece points out that vital arguments are not used, and instead the arguments used in ancient times are the ones used in the modern generation. Kessler's points are accurate. I choose this topic because I remember countless times when my classmates questioned the relevance of the information they were being taught. This is an opportunity to illustrate that this irrelevance is the reason graduates are unemployed... middle of paper... Hargreaves, Steve. "The case of outsourced jobs". Cnnmoney. Last modified 2014.
