Experts say: “Unless you consume only certified organic foods […] you have almost certainly eaten foods containing ingredients whose genes have been modified […].” (Anonymous, 2013, p.4). This statement demonstrates that people eat foods containing Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), yet deny the consequences of eating them. Opinions in scientific society are divided, however recent experiments make it possible to predict the possible effects that the production and consumption of GM foods generate on a global scale. Genetically modified foods should be banned because they generate negative impacts on human health, affect the environment and harm third world nations. Genetically modified foods affect human health by weakening the immune system, causing degenerative diseases and causing the appearance of new viruses. Transgenic food alters the immune system causing increased tolerance to the virus. GMOs cause the immune system to lose its ability to recognize dangerous substances. Additionally, a weakened immune system decreases the number of white blood cells in the body, increasing the chances of developing autoimmune diseases. Additionally, people tend to get degenerative diseases when they eat genetically modified foods. Altered food contains modified DNA, which is assimilated by the body, causing tumors or harmful malformations that can be passed on to subsequent generations. Likewise, experimentation with genetically modified foods will facilitate the emergence of new viruses. Viruses are organisms that can evolve to become immune to antidotes or crossbreed with other viruses that cannot be counteracted. Therefore, the increase in tolerance to viruses, the acquisition of degenerative diseases... half of the paper... will have to face the economic, social and crisis to adapt to the new food industry. The world is facing a controversy, a battle between the benefits promoted by advocates of GM foods and the tangible results. Consumers need to know the consequences of consuming GM foods, however it is unclear whether governments are trying to hide the truth or whether consumers have chosen to ignore it.
