Fair Trade is a trading partnership that aims for greater equity in international trade by maximizing the benefits of the stakeholders involved (“WFTO”). Nearly all (93%) of Starbucks Coffee Company's coffee is ethically sourced through Coffee and Farmer Equity (CAFE) practices, which include Fair Trade (“Responsibly Farmed”). In January 2013, over $1.2 billion in profits from the sale of Kit Kat supported over 7,000 fair trade cocoa farmers through the Nestlé Cocoa Plan (“Kit Kat”). Fair trade products are not only prevalent in Hong Kong, but also throughout the world such as America, Canada, England and Australia. What distinguishes fair trade products from others is their significant impact on both producers and consumers. As for producers, fair trade improves their lives and helps them develop their communities. As for consumers, fair trade reassures them of high-quality products and offers them a way to help protect the environment. Fair trade achieves equity by maximizing the benefits of fair trade producers and consumers in the perspective of quality of life, community development, product quality and environmental protection respectively. The lives of producers under the fair trade system have been improved with increased income. According to Hans Peter Egler, head of trade promotion at the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SESO), producers with the fair trade label on their products benefit on average from an increase in income of 30% compared to those without the label ( SECO). Data showing quantifiable monetary amounts objectively reveals increased earnings among fair trade producers.
