Electronic health record systems are rapidly transforming the healthcare industry from a paper-based system to an automated system. These repositories of digitally stored health information allow for greater continuity of care by all providers who have the ability to access an individual's medical record. Trends and issues in healthcare from the point of view of managing patient information affect areas such as medicine, management, information technology and law. As the healthcare industry moves towards electronic records, there will be a high demand for professionals who can manage the automation of patient information and ensure its security. Effective planning requires an assessment of the environmental factors, both internal and external, that will influence the continued implementation of electronic health record systems. Electronic health record systems store a record of patient health information that can be generated and updated by one or more healthcare encounters. These systems contain patient progress notes, medications, vital signs, medical history, vaccinations, lab results, and radiology reports—in other words, a complete view of the patient rather than sifting through voluminous paper documents. Political factors have a large impact on the implementation of the electronic health record. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and the Affordable Care Act are two policy drivers that are attempting to improve the financial sustainability of healthcare organizations while improving the quality and safety of patient care nationwide. According to CCHIT.org (2013), in mid-2009, certified CCE products accounted for more than 75% of the market. Congress saw the value of such products and recognized their… curve g mid-paper for users of these systems, and as we all know with technology, there can be frustrating problems in the system. However, the return to paper documents is taking steps backwards, not forwards. Scanning the electronic health record systems environment ensures that management has a clear understanding of the issues and trends affecting complex healthcare settings. It is a daunting challenge to review all of these factors in order to manage the successful implementation of these systems as it involves many different areas within the organization or clinical setting working together to ensure healthcare providers are adequately trained on EHR systems and that the organization complies with regulatory standards. Success comes from a clear understanding of all factors and identifying effective ways to stay ahead of the curve.
