September 11, 2001 is a day in history that will be remembered forever. What was initially thought to be a freak accident turned into a terrible nightmare for our country, America was under attack. On the morning of the attacks, a group of Al Qaeda terrorists took control of four commercial airliners bound for California and purposely crashed two of them into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. The last plane crashed in a Pennsylvania field without ever reaching its final destination, the White House. These attacks against the United States were formulated by Islamic culture which has been planning them for many years. Shortly after the fall of the Twin Towers, the United States began to mourn the loss of citizens killed in violent Islamic terrorist attacks. The American flag has become a symbol for many Americans. Putting flags in yards or stickers on cars was one way people began to show their patriotism. Sporting events were canceled and many artists performed benefit concerts for the city. Family members of lost loved ones and supporters attended candlelight memorial services and held moments of silence for the deceased. Even though 9/11 was a day of destruction in the history of the United States, it caused the American people to unite like never before (History.com). Before the attacks of September 11, 2001, the Twin Towers towered above Manhattan as the tallest buildings in the area and the second tallest in the nation. The seventh building of the World Trade Center was the only one to have a different address than the other buildings on the block because it was built ten years after the Twin Towers. Together with the Twin Towers, the seventh building was also razed to the ground. No one expected the...... middle of paper...... I: When the Towers Fall." 9/11 Day - Part I: When the Towers Fall.
