The play Terror and Erebus, written by Gwendolyn MacEwen, is about the tragedy of Franklin's expedition; an expedition to find the Northwest Passage in the 19th century. Franklin, the leader of the expedition, and the entire crew of the Terror and the Erebus die during the journey to find the passage. The ships get stuck in the ice and the men are unable to handle the harsh winter conditions they are forced into. The men arrogantly thought that they were prepared for the journey because of their science-based knowledge. They thought that compasses and various instruments there would lead them to a successful search; however, they forgot a key element of the quest, the quest for learning. They made no attempt to learn about the environmental conditions or landscape of the latitude through which they would travel. As a result, this led to their demise; how the forces of nature conquered men dependent on science.
