In this essay I will discuss my learning style in a critical and reflective way and evaluate how to improve it. A person's learning style is his or her individual method of obtaining and processing information in various scenarios. It will be unique to them as it is the preferred approach to learning as it offers the best results. (Dunn and Griggs, 2009) Kolb (1984) considers individual approaches using the learning styles inventory. Through this, four learning phases are identified, those of which require specific learning skills. Based on Kolb's theories, Honey and Mumford (2006) developed the Learning Styles Questionnaire (LSQ). It suggests four fundamental learning styles: those of the activist, the reflector, the theorist, and the pragmatist. (Appendix 1) Through their questionnaire, I recognized that I lean towards being a reflector. I prefer to observe and accumulate information. Contemplate the ideas in order to reach the most appropriate conclusion. While my dominant learning style is Reflector, I have traits of the other styles. For example, I prefer to analyze and organize my thought process. I find it difficult to accept something that doesn't fit my mindset, unless proven otherwise. Studies show that my Asian cultural influence is a factor in how I learn. Barron and Arcodia (2002) demonstrated that race influences a person's learning style. Furthermore, a common trait among us is that of being a passive learner rather than an activist. (Charlesworth, 2008; Wong, 2004) By understanding my learning style, I will be able to strengthen my weaknesses. Frankel (2009) highlights this because the reason for learning is to be able to acquire new skills as it is a continuous process throughout our lives. Kolb (1984) ba...... middle of paper ......
