Yes, social media sites that are supposed to bring families and friends closer together also give some people their worst nightmares. “Children especially are vulnerable to the practice of cyberbullying in which perpetrators, anonymously or even posing as people the victims trust, terrorize people in front of their peers” (Jung). Because these predators can hide behind fake names, profile pictures, and information, they are able to get away with virtually anything they want. This means they can get away with bullying without any consequences for them. Social media accounts can be deleted, usernames can change, and many other things can make these predators somewhat untraceable. Because of this, people all over the world end up committing suicide or at least attempt to commit suicide as these incidents can end up causing them emotional harm. According to a 2010 CBS news report, 42% of young people reported being victims of cyberbullying (Jung). This means that just six years ago just under half of young people using social media were victims of cyberbullying. We can therefore only assume that the number of people who are victims of cyberbullying has increased even more. This is a big problem that needs to be solved and may be the biggest problem with using social media
