The Dominion of Canada was not born of nationalism or revolution. Prior to Canadian Confederation, the Fathers of Confederation held numerous conferences and negotiations before officiating at Canada's independence. The first step in building a nation was for all of the British North American colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada to join together as one nation to realize the dream of becoming one country. In this assignment you will come across the three major conferences that were held in Charlottetown, Quebec and London, and which brought about the birth of the Canadian nation. In the spring of 1864, the Premier of Nova Scotia, Charles Tupper, the Premier of New Brunswick, Samuel Leonard Tilley, and the Premier of Prince Edward Island, John Hamilton Gray, had discussed the Maritime Union at length. A surprise came from the premier of the Province of Canada, John A. Macdonald, who asked to participate in the negotiations of the Atlantic premiers. The request was then taken to London and was accepted by the Colonial Office. As a solution to their difficulties, the members requested consent to attend the meeting of the colonies to spread the word of the British North American Union. During the Grand Coalition, John A. Macdonald, George-Etienne Cartier, and George Brown led their political parties to help stop political trouble. On September 1, 1864, the Charlottetown Conference for Canadian Confederation began. At the conference, John A. Macdonald and George-Etienne Cartier proposed arguments in favor of a union of the four colonies. Alexander Tilloch Galt presented the financial provisions of the Province of Canada's proposal if such a union is achieved.
