Do economic classes influence suicide rates? All kinds of people, rich and poor, commit suicide, but suicide and suicide prevention are growing. Each year, approximately 4,600 young people lose their lives to suicide (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2014). So what does the country offer in help? Many programs and treatments exist to help those who have resorted to or contemplated suicide. Specialized programs have been created, but not all are accessible. Financial problems make it difficult for some to access care. Economic class is an important factor in the success rate of suicidal adolescents who receive treatment and those who do not. For youth ages 10 to 24, suicide is the third leading cause of death (CDC, 2014). Suicide is preventable, but we must be aware of the causes, treatments and solutions. Being aware is key Preventing suicide requires people to have knowledge and understanding. It is better to be informed about the signs, causes and forms of suicide. Signs of suicide can be very difficult to spot; the signs can be subtle. Causes of suicide may come from home, but they also occur at school. Bullying, stress, low self-esteem, and abuse all lead to suicide (CDC, 2014; Suicide Awareness Voices of Education [SAVE], 2014). Being students, young people have many possibilities and opportunities to prevent or cause suicide. . Every day people are pushed beyond their limits. Among all high school students, 7% have attempted suicide, meaning they have not succeeded (Bullying Statistics, n.d.). Maybe they had someone trying to help them.
