Finally the most controversial demand was that Quebec receive special status as a “distinct” society. By now the end of the meeting was approaching, everyone was even more motivated by everything they had already accomplished. It was true that Quebec was unlike any other province; technically they were distinct among the others. Although some Premiers felt uncomfortable giving a province special status, they felt they had already won so much that it was no big deal to simply call them what they were; different. The problem with this clause is that Quebec interpreted it to mean that the special status would give them advantages in court, establishing that their distinctive characteristics made them different from other Canadians. In contrast, Mulroney did not intend for this to make them different from others on the court, he simply intended to give them a special status. At first most Canadians had the same impression as Mulroney, except Quebec. Now the Meech Lake deal has been presented to the public. At first it was received with much enthusiasm as it was flaunted as the nation's latest piece. The media said that if the document had managed to overcome the first wave of criticism, it could have passed without problems. Mulroney said everything was moving as expected, lots of interest and excitement… That was until Pierre Trudeau came out with his harsh opinion on the Agreement. Mulroney said that Trudeau had planned a secret attack on Meech Lake and was being very shifty and insincere about the whole thing. Mulroney had contacted Trudeau regarding his opinion on the Agreement and Trudeau had never expressed his concerns until he published his harsh criticism. Pierre Trudeau published his thoughts and did not hold back his insults towards...... middle of paper ... ...ents and therefore against the fact that the provinces have more control than federal institutions. Brian Mulroney, for Trudeau, was upsetting the balance of power that existed between the provinces and the federal government. The federal government is supposed to be the supreme power among the provinces, and Mulroney was on the verge of reversing the controls. That said, Mulroney believes he is staying true to Trudeau's vision of a "just society" by giving provinces more say in what happens to them. Mulroney examined what Trudeau had previously expressed as possible deals between the provincial and federal governments and found that Trudeau was sabotaging Mulroney's plans only because Trudeau could not bear to see another Prime Minister succeed in what he had failed to do . Whether this is true or not, it is obvious that the battle over the Meech Lake Agreement was ultimately won by Trudeau.
