Topic > Saving energy now to save the Earth later - 937

Currently there are many different resources for using energy, both renewable and non-renewable. Non-renewable resources include those resources that, once used, will cease to exist, such as oil and coal extracted from the Earth. Kentucky, the state where I live, was listed as the third largest producer of electricity using coal in 2011 (Kentucky, 2012). This production represented ten percent of total U.S. coal production for that year, as well as ninety-three percent of the total electricity generated for the state (Kentucky, 2012). The Ghent Power Plant, which incidentally is about seven miles from my house, has been listed among the 100 largest power plants in the United States as of 2010 (Kentucky, 2012). My home currently uses both electric and natural gas resources. The electricity comes from a power company that uses a coal-generated electricity production method and gas is our heat source through the furnace. Coal and natural gas are, however, fossil fuels and as such non-renewable. Both of our vehicles use gasoline for travel, which is refined from petroleum, also a non-renewable resource, the use of which produces large amounts of pollution that contribute to the greenhouse effect. Mining of both also affects the ecosystems in which they are found, destroying forests and thus removing the homes of numerous animals. However, for our next vehicle purchase, I believe we will strongly consider a hybrid vehicle, which relies on both gasoline and electricity. If renewable resources were to become available for these energy needs, however, we can only hope that current energy providers upgrade their equipment to provide energy through renewable methods. Therefore, there are three renewable resources that I will focus on... middle of the paper... beginning of this incentive, very few light bulbs in our house are normal. We recently chose the option offered by our electric company to install a switch on our water heater that, during the summer months, cyclically changes the time the water heater is actually on, thus saving electricity during the hotter months. Other ways we could save energy would be to replace filters in the house regularly, I could ride a pool car to work and my husband could walk to work more often, and we could install shower heads in bathrooms that save energy. water flow to conserve the amount of hot water used (Energy Conservation, 2013). There are several things people can do to save energy, and the incentives introduced by energy companies to assist in this effort are commendable. Saving energy now could very well save the Earth in the future.
