Ethical Issues Raised by Privacy Service Providers Abstract: This paper examines the use of Internet technologies (particularly SafeWeb.com) to counter invasions of personal privacy and censorship. The article begins by exploring the methods by which governments, corporations, and commercial agents invade personal privacy. He also discusses Internet censorship at the corporate and government levels. We then proceed to discuss SafeWeb.com, a technology that allows Internet users to browse the Web privately and view censored content. The article concludes by exploring some of the ethical issues raised by Internet privacy and censorship in specific relation to SafeWeb, concluding that the application of SafeWeb to circumvent the authority of governments and corporations is inherently unethical. Part of the allure of the Internet has always been the anonymity it offers its users. However, with the growth of the Internet, which has brought capitalists and governments into the game, the old rules are changing rapidly. E-commerce companies use the latest technologies to track minute details about customer behavior. The FBI's Carnivore email tracking system is increasingly being used to violate netizens' privacy. Companies now monitor their employees' web and email usage. In addition to these privacy violations, Internet users are also censored, as governments, companies, and other institutions block access to certain sites. However, since technology can be used to wage war on personal freedoms, it can also be employed in the fight against censorship and invasion of privacy.
