When I worked as a customer service representative at a bank, one of my responsibilities was to supervise the tellers. I was friends with two cashiers who worked there at the time. We hung out together outside of work and had a lot of fun. At some point I started to notice that they are too friendly with each other and behave inappropriately for a professional environment. I decided to confront them and they confessed to me that they were dating. That's when I realized I was faced with an ethical dilemma. I had to make a choice: one was to look away, pretending not to notice anything and to do nothing; the second choice was to talk to them and try to explain that they couldn't continue to behave this way, and the third choice, which is the right choice, is to report them to my manager. I had to think for a while, and that's when I realized that my job was important to me and that I was their supervisor first and their friend second and I had to do something about this situation if I consider myself a professional. I felt it would be fair to give them the benefit of the doubt and let them know how I feel and what situation they are putting me in. I was hoping they would start acting like adults. I was trying to resolve this situation at all costs without involving the top management and saving them from trouble. I tried to maintain their and my dignity. One day I took them aside and confronted them about their behavior and told them it had to stop. They need to start behaving professionally at work, and if they choose to continue dating, they can do so outside of work as well. After our long conversation they became very distant and angry with me; however, I felt I did the right thing at the time. Furthermore, they continued to behave inappropriately and it was starting to become very apparent that I and some customers were not making comments. At that point I had no choice but to report them to my manager. When I talked to my manager, I told her the whole situation, including that I talked to them before going to her and I didn't get any results from this.
