Some might call it selfish to base one's actions on an internal scale of values but, to me, it seems like I'm the only thing in the world I have some control over; therefore, myself must be the source and basis of my resources. Such a vision protects me from external circumstances, as happened to Orestes after the murders, because he found a free path through the condemnations and judgments of others. This was precisely Electra's failure: she lacked the courage to believe and trust herself and thus fell victim to the judgment of others. This was also the case with Hawthorne's "Young Goodman Brown." Although Goodman Brown glimpsed a reality that his community struggled to deny, he lacked the courage and self-confidence to pursue this discovery and ultimately replace his lost illusions about community values with a perception of reality and a system of unique values! and to himself. He couldn't find within himself the strength needed to take the next step, from disillusionment to freedom, that Orestes and Biff had managed to find. Biff's brother, Happy, is the latest example of someone who couldn't, or wouldn't, break away from the safe haven of conformity and test himself on the high seas.
