Effective Recruitment InterviewsIt is essential to first outline our terms of reference. Specifically, what do we mean by effective recruitment interviews? It can be said that the effectiveness of an interview process lies in its ability to identify the candidates who most closely match the requirements of the job requested. Countless recruiting decisions have been made based on the interpersonal chemistry between interviewer and candidate; some of these decisions will be successful, others will lead to failure of an unsuitable candidate. The purpose of the recruitment interview should be to maximize the likelihood of a successful selection decision. To achieve this in a repeatable manner within an organization, a set of standards that constitute best practices should be enumerated and followed as closely as possible. With the goal of objectivity in view, the process should begin long before candidates are even selected for interview. It is essential to have clear, precise and understandable job and person specifications agreed by interested parties in the interview process. Without this, interviewers may not agree on the composition of the right candidate, and without this clear and implicit agreement on which elements are most important in a candidate, any selection process is bound to encounter difficulties at the interview stage, because different interviewers will see a candidate differently; what answers are important to one interviewer may be irrelevant to another. Once these specifications have been drafted and agreed, it is a much simpler process to produce a detailed and objective interview matrix that accurately reflects the key requirements of the job.
