Topic > Reflections on the article on the prevalence of mood disorders

Changing moods are a common occurrence, but some are drastic and lead to intense fluctuations in activity and energy levels. Such changes require medical interventions. Patients with bipolar disorder put their schoolwork, safety, health, and employment at risk and make up approximately 5.7 million American adults (The Huffington Post, 2014). Major depression is characterized by a long period of sadness. It causes people to lose sleep and experience eating disorders and affects approximately 14.8 million American adults. Genetic, psychological, and environmental factors combined are likely to cause depression (The Huffington Post, 2014). This information on the prevalence of bipolar disorder and depression was compiled by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Mood disorders are common and have devastating outcomes such as suicide, illness, and poor quality of life (Qureshi and Al-Bedah, 2013, p.639). Despite the high prevalence, very few patients fully respond to medical and psychological interventions aimed at reducing risk. Approximately thirty to forty percent of patients suffering from depression respond to psychotherapeutic and pharmacological intervention (Qureshi and Al-Bedah, 2013, p.639). Since it is common among the population, research and studies have been carried out on how to effectively curb mood disorders. In some cases, combinations of drugs and therapies have been used in an attempt to treat mood disorders. Some of the successful interventional activities include light therapy, acupuncture, yoga, sleep deprivation, Rhodiola rosea, and mindfulness therapies (Qureshi and Al-Bedah, 2013, p.639). Mood disorders change in their symptoms and epidemiological trends over time, making it difficult to find a long-lasting conventional cure. Therefore, most patients pre...middle of paper......effective treatment methods. This provides patients with a variety of treatments they can choose from depending on their financial ability and response. Mood disorders are an important topic for the general public around the world. There is a high prevalence of mental disorders in the world and anyone can be affected by them. Some people suffer from mood disorders without realizing it. They console themselves by saying that it is a temporary phase. If this is left unchecked for a long time, it can lead to worse conditions such as major depression. Information about mood disorders allows patients to be aware of their mood changes and when they need medication. It also helps keep the population informed about available medical and non-medical interventions. Therefore, the general public can unite to prevent further spread leading to a healthy population.
