Topic > Critical Analysis of the Movie Step Up 2: The Streets

After the great success of the 2006 movie "Step Up", Touchstone Pictures released the sequel called "Step Up 2: The Streets". After the death of his parents, the main character, Andy, was forced to attend the Maryland School of the Arts to broaden the range of his dance techniques. At the same time, Andy was kicked out of the street dance team called 4-1-0, so she founded her own team with several talented but unsuccessful peers from the School of the Arts, who wanted to compete in an underground dance competition "Streets" . The film was directed by Jon M. Chu, also known for directing "GI Joe: Retaliation". The film "Step Up 2" grossed more than fifteen million dollars while its budget was just twenty-two million; as a result, it surpassed the original film and was quite successful. Some films do not need unimaginable special effects, sophisticated plot and world-famous actors. Sometimes all you need is a pleasant atmosphere, like in the movie Step Up 2: The Streets, which consists of many memorable, funny and spectacular moments. This film allows the audience to relax and immerse themselves in the world of street dance, while at the same time there are many elements of youth cinema, such as first love, relationships with peers, the search for ideals. One of the most memorable episodes of the film is the scene of the final dance which took place in the rain. “In a duel with the original, Step Up 2 wins only for that rain-soaked street routine” (Lankford 48). The final dance scene attracts the audience due to the variety of cinematographic techniques used, the combination of music and choreography, as well as the motivating effect on the spectators. The final scene captures the audience's attention by using various cinematic techniques which...... paper... was done by Andy. The actors' charisma and positive energy peaked in the final scene; consequently, dancing in the rain is the most memorable moment due to the cinematic techniques used, the soundtracks and dances, and the positive effect on the audience. It is no coincidence that the film Step Up 2: The Streets is a great success because "the dancing is undoubtedly superb and the main characters put in a valiant effort" (Edwards).
