Topic > Ireland's growth as a modern society - 1183

“Becoming a modern society means industrialisation, urbanization and increasing levels of literacy, education and wealth. ”― Samuel P. Huntington Evolution as a nation involves struggle, conflict, and the need to have an open mind when facing and evaluating various situations and options. Through the evolution of a society comes the disturbing sensation of change, which many fail to embrace. With the term social modernization, social refers to a gathering or community of people and modernization is the movement from old to new but with reference to social sciences it is the process of urbanization and industrialization which in turn affects the lives of people. Urbanization is the development of urban areas due to a change in demand for employment and various other factors from rural areas to cities, while industrialization is the shift from a society centered on agriculture to one based on manufacturing, technology and on the economic benefits. This essay will cover identifying turning points in Ireland, which influenced and influenced their social policy along with social modernization and the period of transition from recessions to booms to an uncertain economy. Social services which include; education, housing, healthcare, income maintenance and personal social services form the epicenter and focus of social policy and focus on the well-being of individuals and societies (Curry, 1980). Social policies are implemented by governments generally for the betterment of society and those who are disadvantaged. This is done by trying to emphasize the sense of equality in all spheres of life (Curry, 1980). It is important to look at Ireland's history to understand the reasons behind social policies. Ireland... middle of the page... and at times had to go back to basics and rebuild from the ground up as seen in recent years. It has formed its own identity, fought internal battles, and its economy is slowly improving. We have moved from a traditional society to a modern one where the focus is on imports, exports, industrialization and creating interest for international investors. It is a country that was formed around the foundations of Catholicism and has now slowly emerged as a republic, led by the government but in the hands of the people. As is evident, there is a link between social policy and economics (Considine, et al., 2009), since many policies are based and shaped by the current economic situation and vice versa, without a sense of economic sustainability and a continuous flow of income, some policies cannot continue and a model needs to be developed for Ireland's future success..
