Topic > Analysis of Inequality in Everyday Life - 1049

Ordinary people, in all walks of life, experience inequality from their homes to their workplaces. It can take the form of denying girls the right to education, denying people the right to marry, refusing to render services to a certain race, or favoring one person against another. Inequality is the condition of inequality, lack of equality or disparity. This article will describe and examine the inequality I faced in the workplace through my department manager. I work at a grocery store in the deli section where my manager started a new rule of keeping a journal. My manager writes down every mistake an employee makes, including when an employee forgets to do a task or whenever an employee calls in sick. On Sunday morning, February 16, 2014, I called my manager and told her I couldn't come to work that day because I was sick. When I returned to work on Thursday, a colleague in my department told me she had discovered that my manager had written my name in her diary because I had called in sick. After further investigation, I found out that she only wrote the name of the employees who are not loyal to her. Of those who are devoted to her, especially two employees who do what she wants them to do for her, she did not write down their names when they both called in sick. I decided to tell the store employee representatives about it. Furthermore, this article will analyze my subjectivity which “refers to how a person's perspective, experiences, and values shape their perception of the everyday world” (Brock, Raby & Thomas, 2012 p. 35) on how I experienced inequality in the workplace. Inequality can affect us one way or another, starting from person-to-person microinteraction and extending to macrosociety to… middle of paper… the workplace. I learned about the power superiors have over their subordinates, normalization, and the concept of role taking. That people accept unfair treatment they have witnessed as the standard in society. People see it as normal and have no reason to change or go against it. Furthermore, no matter where you are, you will always encounter inequalities even from people you trust and who are friendly to you. By observing the interaction between my manager and my colleagues I learned how she interacted with them, who she gives more favors to, who she is closer to, who never gets reported when an offense has occurred. Likewise I have learned from talking to my colleagues, those who are not in his favor and also from this incident. It is important that I learned these concepts because it helps me understand the different sociological interactions in our society.
