Floods in Memphis, Tennessee are terrible events, but some have left their mark on history and have impacted society causing many people to search for solutions. Historic flood events date back beyond 1927, but Memphis' first calamitous flood occurred in 1927, then in 2011, but between these dates there were street floods that occurred without interacting with the river. Many important aspects of daily life are lost during floods: lives, homes and money. People are looking for solutions to prevent flooding, and well-executed ideas could easily become an ideal panacea. Memphis is where I grew up and experienced several floods, which gives me a much stronger feeling about the history, impacts, and techniques for stopping floods. There are several well-known floods that affected Memphis, Tennessee, such as the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927, the Mississippi River flood of 2011, and storms that caused street flooding such as those in 2008 or 2010. The great flood of Mississippi River of 1927 was caused by extremely heavy rains that swelled the Mississippi River to its water carrying capacity. People tried to prevent flooding in Memphis by building and fortifying levees to expel water from the land; however, river water began to seep through the sandbags, which were supposed to keep the water out. Memphis fire trucks had appeared in the breaches and pumped water onto the sandbags. Despite valiant efforts, the river overflowed its banks and caused extensive damage and deaths, reportedly affecting hundreds of people. Once again, heavy rainfall was the catalyst for numerous floods in Tennessee, including the Mississippi River flood of 2011. This flood reached over forty-eight... middle of paper... fully flood zones, which, yes he hopes, it would preclude flooding. The floods that hit Memphis, Tennessee have become part of history, have had devastating impacts and have solutions. The Memphis Floods may not be a major chapter in history, but they influenced the growth of Memphis. The impact leaves scars on many people and small scratches on others, but in any case a very small number of people would wish for this misfortune. Many would prefer to have a solution to prevent river flooding or a huge amount of rainfall. Society has experienced these floods almost every year, but some have been more damaging and dangerous, which could lead to an accumulation of traumatic events that leave the flood in history and impact Memphis for years. Solutions to flooding should be implemented as soon as possible, so no one has to face losing anything valuable.
