The development of our Church's understanding of Christ is intriguing and exciting. This essay will explore the evolution of the way the Church understood the person of Jesus Christ over the first five centuries, the challenges faced and the teachings that emerged, taking into account the different currents of opposition and the problems faced and solved by a multitude of thinkers.Jesus Christ is the source and center of the Church. We believe that Jesus Christ, the incarnate Son, is the 'way' to the Father. Who do you say I am? “I am the way, the truth and the Life, no one comes to the Father except through me”. (Jn 14.6) Over the centuries the Church has had to face a paradox because on the one hand we encounter God in the person of Jesus, on the other the Father dwells beyond Jesus. The Church is centered on the person of Jesus Christ because in Him the Christians learn to discover who God really is and therefore who the human being is and what our true origin and destiny is. The role of the Church, among others, is to accompany humanity in its pilgrimage through the centuries in developing our understanding of Jesus.
