In my community I know kids who commit adolescent violence and I would like them to stop before they end up in prison and this could ruin their lives. Violent crimes are committed by teenagers every year. Every year more and more teenagers succumb to violence, both as aggressors and victims. It is important for parents or adults who work with young people to understand the contributing factors and how to help them. Adolescent violence takes many forms and varies in severity. The most infamous and serious form of teen violence are the school shootings seen in the news. More common, however, are teenagers who shoot themselves in the streets every day. School bullying, although less serious, is also a form of adolescent violence. There are different types of adolescent violence and they are called physical violence, dating violence, predatory violence, situational violence and relationship violence. Many teens are concerned about youth violence, and with good reason. Every year too many teenagers commit acts of violence and their victims are very often other teenagers. During adolescence, adolescents interact with a wide variety of people, situations, and emotions. In many situations, personal conflict between different individuals has the potential to result in violence and/or injury. Parents should help their children learn to manage their emotions without using violence; they should talk to their kids about ways to resolve arguments and fights without weapons or violence. Preventive methods may include learning nonviolent ways to control your anger or developing more effective problem-solving skills. If there is violence in the family, the risk that the adolescent will be involved in future violence increases. Schools are more likely to be dangerous if they are high schools in urban environments, and minority groups in these environments are at greater risk of being killed at school. Young people are less likely to be involved in adolescent violence if they have learned nonviolent ways to solve problems, if they have strong family ties, and if they have goals and commitment in school. Parents can help reduce the risk of their adolescents becoming perpetrators or victims of violence if they talk to them every day and show that they care and want their teens to avoid violence and drug abuse. Parents should also know who their teen's friends are and where they spend their time, and encourage them to get involved in positive activities.
