The purpose of this essay is to develop further understanding of the impact of social media on political debate. By looking at the topic of social media and the use of rhetoric in response to politics in the 21st century, a deeper understanding of the issue can be established. Social media has become a primary source of discussion about politics by the average citizen; whether through sharing articles, “memes,” advertisements, or personal expository statements. As a result, large amounts of information and ideas are disseminated rapidly across a wide variety of topics. However, much of this information may not be accurate and could be interpreted incorrectly. As a result, potentially misinformed citizens may not be able to cast an appropriate vote. With the recent Canadian federal election, a wide range of distorted and misinformed posts have spread across social media. These posts often tend to lead to heated discussions and debates. By interpreting the accuracy of the information presented, as well as the context of the situation, including personal opinion, we can develop an understanding of individuals' use of rhetoric and discourse with respect to political debate. In addition to this primary source, a series of articles will be addressed that discuss the use of rhetoric on social media, as well as the use of social media in a political context. Many articles may discuss social media and its implications on society and privacy, but less deliberate on the effects social media can have on impacting citizens' political perspectives. The use of language on social media, especially among younger generations, tends to be rudimentary and as a result may not be adequate in representing the problem. This tends to leave the discussion open to personal interpretation and often leads to misinformation. Looking at the use of rhetoric on social media in general, as well as the use of social media for political discussion, I intend to develop and support this
