Ethics of the Tobacco Industry The tobacco industry is a very unethical industry, due to the long-term effects of tobacco on humans. Furthermore, the industry does not value ethical and social responsibility as well as it should. There are many factors that make the industry unethical; some of the reasons are the way cigarette companies around the world advertise, the way governments and cigarette companies make huge profits from cigarette sales, and the labeling of health risks. However, I believe there is something tobacco companies can do to improve their strategy when it comes to their ethics. I think they should always look out for the best interest of their consumers, as well as rigorously advertise the effects of cigarettes and what people get for their money. One way the tobacco industry can be more ethical is changing their advertising strategy. I believe that today's advertising strategy is very misleading regarding cigarettes. Examples of this unethical advertising are found in Argentina, where 20% of television advertising is spent on smoking ads, as well as in countries in and around Africa there are billboards depicting a man in a suit and tie coming down from a black Mercedes as driver. holds the door. This proves that cigarettes make people elegant and sophisticated, making cigarettes seem not only harmless but elegant. Another good example of unethical depiction on cigarettes is in Nigeria; here they promote a cigarette for graduates, with the image of a university and a student in cap and gown. As if that weren't a misleading image, they add a slogan that says, "A very important cigarette for very important people." These ads and slogans are... middle of paper... where they knowingly sit back and let the people of their country slowly die from addiction and disease. I believe the tobacco industry is unethical, they provide a product that causes addiction and eventually death if smoking continues for most of a person's life. I think the tobacco industry needs to take more responsibility for their product. I believe they should do this by not advertising the false image of being a cigarette smoker and by focusing on what consumers will actually get for their money when they buy cigarettes. They should focus on the sensation it gives people and what the cigarette experience actually is in the most literal terms. Furthermore, cigarette companies should communicate to customers in advance, via easy-to-read labels, the long-term and short-term effects of smoking, to let people clearly know what they are buying and what its effects are..
